Our NewTown - pie tin

The pie tin is a little cafe we have walked past many times on the way to the library but never visited. I'm glad we did.
It's a trendy looking joint with communal table, cushions made out of flour sacks and conversational cutlery. (it tells you to use your hands). But what you really go to the pie tin for are the pies.

One window is full of the savoury. Chicken and leek, beef brisket, chilli, veg korma, beef and stout. These are gourmet pies at their best. $10 gets you a pie and two sides and while that seems expensive for a pie it was a pretty hearty meal. I got a beef brisket with leaf and rice salad. The leaf salad was good but both Myl and I decided we didn't like rice salad. When cold rice goes a bit too crunchy.

What we could not go past, however, we're the dessert pies. At 6 or 7 50 a pop you get pretty good Newtown cake value. And look at those pies! I
couldn't choose so Myl went off to get one to share and came back with two.
We didn't order it but there is an apple pie there that is bigger than Lucy.

Our poor baby girl was pretty sick on Saturday but enjoyed pointing at my pie and eating cream. The only food she would eat all day. It's not a heaps child friendly spot but did alright. It was pretty packed on the weekend but you can also get takeaway. We'll be back maybe for a cheeky dessert date sometime.

Flashbacks

With a sick baby asleep upstairs I'm sitting here reading some old blog posts, thinking of her and wanting to go give her a big cuddle.

If you'd like to come with me down memory lane here is what I'm reading.

On the Ledge

40 Weeks

Dear little one...

I'm saving the reading of the birth story till Thursday. I haven't read it since I wrote it.
Exciting days I tell ya!

When you are due.

On this day a year ago I was feeling very huge, very tired and very pregnant. I remember going to my midwife appointment and discussing potential labour inducing techniques. The midwife had said my little girl was posterior and not looking like coming any time soon. I went home and cried.

I had been waiting for this little life to come bursting out into the world for such a long time. One week later she arrived in a very unexpected way.

It's been a whole year since my baby was due to arrive and if I've learned one thing about being a mama since then it's that these lovely squishy little individuals just ain't that keen in any type of due date.

How many times have I said in my head or out loud,
It's time for your nap
It's time for you to eat
It's time for you to crawl
It's time for you to play nicely while mama puts the washing on/does the dishes/talks on the phone?

I think it would be easy of our little people worked like clockwork we could keep them like tamagotchis and feed, sleep and play with them all bundled into our schedule but how joyless would that be?!

My little girl does not pay attention to due dates or fit tightly into some schedule from a book because she is a person with emotions and needs and likes and dislikes. As much as it frustrates me to not know what I'm doing as a parent most of the time, I think I need to understand that my little girl is able to tell me the things she needs. And she's only going to get better at telling I just need to take the time to listen.

Our NewTown - urban bites

This is our go to cafe.
It's close enough that Lucy can walk there, tasty, friendly staff and not too expensive. It's the go to cafe for people from Myl's college and our old church so it's nice to often see a familiar face.

We went last week for a little family breakfast. Is breakfast not the finest meat to dine out for?

We ordered Lucy her first baby cino. She ate one tiny spoonful of froth, screwed her nose up and had no more. Oh well. We'll embrace cafe culture together another day.

Eleven months

My little girl is eleven months old.

She is getting so big!

Lucy has started
Walking
Talking - duck, ball, dog, hello.
Using a spoon
Understanding the things we say and responding.

Lucy likes
Yoghurt
Books
Music and dancing
Walking round and pointing at things
Shoes!
Going out in the morning
Dogs
Play school and yo gabby gabba. Shameful I know but there was this one time when she was sick.

Lucy doesn't like
Sleeping or napping
Being fed
Sitting still
Being gentle with faces
Having her fingernails cut.

She's a funny little thing.
I love her.
