the gypsies - week one

We packed up our house just over a week ago. It feels like an age.

Our last day in Newtown was a rainy one. We had camped on our bedroom floor after packing up all our things into a storage container.
We had breakfast at our go-to cafe for the very last time. I had the pancakes. With ice-cream.
Time to celebrate eh?

Then it was a long day of cleaning.
We had booked a steam cleaner to come at 3pm.
When he turned up at one I freaked out. I had to move everything off the carpets.
I was home alone.
When the guy I imagined to be a short middle eastern man turned out to be a tall blonde stereotypical Scandinavian man I left the front door open. It all felt a little too much like a bad taste film.

After pack pack packing and clean clean cleaning we headed to the country. I had a cramp in my scrubbing arm and as we drove off after dropping off our keys I began to feel so sad.
It was the end of an era.
Four long joyful hard blessed years.
And just like that, it was gone.

We drove west for my nieces first birthday, spent the weekend there and then drove down the inland route to Ulladulla. It was so great to drive a different way. It was mostly the same way we drove to our honeymoon and brought back some lovely memories.

We holidayed by the beach with college friends. It was a GREAT week.
I'm going to miss seeing those people regularly. We had seven adults and six kids in a little shack by the sea. We swam and ate and drank port. We chatted and laughed and told very immature jokes.

By Friday we were feeling well rested and happy.

Our youth group camping plans had been cancelled because of rain and the youth camp was happening at church so we headed up the coast to Sydney.

I should have known something was wrong when the little one had an accident en route. A messy accident. And then I got tired. Real tired.

My throat was sore, my head pounding. I ached. I could barely get out of the car to fetch doughnuts from Berry. In fact I didn't. I attempted it then Myl had to come to the rescue.

The little ones were grizzly. I can only imagine they felt it too but had no words to tell me.
We got to the church hall, set up, and slept.

The next day was a bit of a blur. I slept and got up, slept and attempted food. The girls slept and played. Myl was an angel. And then he got it too.

We stayed the night with friends but our plans to go camping all the next week we feared would need to be put on hold. We needed somewhere to rest and recuperate. Somewhere to lick our wounds. So I write this sitting on the lounge at good ole Mum and Dads. We're here for the next little while till we feel all better and then...who knows!

camping with a toddler

Our first point of holiday business was a trip up the coast to go camping.
I knew that if we didn't get away then our holidays could easily slip away without us doing anything.

So off we went to Umina Beach.
It was so good.

I was a bit nervous about how Lu would go. She would make or break our holiday. A week without napping or late crazy nights would be enough to make camping forever a dirty word but she was an absolute champ. She was going through a brilliant sleeping pattern (which has since ended) and would go to sleep with a simple "goodnight." We packed our days so full of fun that she was just exhausted each evening.

I was amazed at how little it took to amuse our little family each day. A walk along the beach, a play on the swings, a swim in the pool and a wander after the ducks. Sandwiches for lunch and BBQ for tea.

It was relaxing and also awesome.
I think we'll make camping our yearly holiday.

staycation + 2.5 years

Last weekend we had a staycation.
Myl had the weekend off work and it was our 2.5 year wedding anniversary.
Any excuse will do.

It was cold and rainy on the Friday so we went to DFO after a lovely long sleep in.
We walked around and got some sweet cheap clothes.
We had dumplings at our favourite little spot in Ashfield.

On Saturday we hit the city.
I showed Myl the ridiculous new Westfield at Centrepoint.
We changed Lucy in the fantastically snazzy parents room complete with L'Occtaine hand lotion.
(I know, ridiculous)
We walked through the city chatting and holding hands.
We saw about 100 screaming teenagers watching k-pop.
Then we went to the rocks. We had planned to go to the Museum of Contemporary Art but it is being renovated and is completely closed. :(
But that did not rain on our parade. We wandered about the cobble stone lanes of the rocks. My imagination ran away with me a few times as I had visions of unearthing a plague rat and our little family becoming infected. (A little plaque told me however, that there were only three plague victims in the rocks... in the early 1900's....aaaand they pulled down and burnt their houses. It set my imaginations at ease*)
We went to a sweet little cafe, looked at the markets and ate tasty pancakes at one of our favourite restaurants.
We watched the sunset from a little lookout. It was very sweet.
We meant to catch the bus from the rocks but ended up walking all the way to Vic Park. Lucy fell asleep.

When we got home we had a lovely surprise from my siblings and co. We missed out on dinner with them but we had a nice little chat and some gelato.

More pictures (and what we did on Sunday) to come next week!

*Yes, I have been reading Anne of Green Gables if you were wondering. Her thoughts are becoming my life.

holidays

Just a quick post to say we are still alive having fun on holidays.
We've been visiting family and Lucy has had a wild social life.

We are back at home for one night before heading on our church youth camp.

Should be fun!

More posts next week.

easter weekend

We went to Canberra for the National Folk Festival for the Easter weekend.
It's a festival of folk music, dancing, tasty food and rockin' hippy clothing.

Lucy was pretty good for the most part. It was really strange being back at the festival with a baby. I got really good at the public feed. Lucy was fed in concerts, in front of fireplaces, in corridors and in the car. I think she really likes Folk music. She mostly slept in concerts. We went to a Joni Mitchell covers concert and she just lay back and swayed to the music. Or was that me swaying?

There were definitely moments of overtiredness and overfolkmusicness. On one of the nights our little girl had just had enough. Yes, there is such a thing as too much folk music. She also had a rather precious moment after church at the Pancake Factory on the Sunday. It was one of those days that looks cold outside but then turns hot. I had rugged Lucy up for a cold day and she got hot, hungry and had a messy nappy. She was pretty inconsolable. (Not really what you want in a restaurant) Thank God for my lovely Myl. He walked round and round with her till she calmed down enough for a feed. It was such a scary sounding cry. It made me feel really out of control and embarrassed to have the whole family witnessing what I felt was my inability to effectively mother. EUuuugh!
I think having a generally happy baby makes me really freak out when she does cry like that. It's hard not to feel like I have done something horribly wrong when Lucy cries.

Oh my. This outfit does not match at all. Sorry little girl your mama is not so great at fashion.

All in all we had a lovely weekend. It was nice to have so many family members only too happy to have a cuddle or walk around with our little girl. Mum (above) especially liked it when people asked her about "her" baby.

It was a nice weekend for baby's first holiday but I was pretty glad to get home. There is only so much out and about an almost 4 week old and her post c-section mama can do.

take a dive in the sky

When we were away on holidays my two little brothers in law went sky diving.

Myl and I went along for moral support.

I'm pretty sure I was more nervous than they were.
